Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3, which was greenlit after Wonder Woman 1984, is reportedly not moving forward in its current version. One of the most prominent Justice League heroes in the DC Universe (formerly known as the DCEU) has been Wonder Woman ever since Gal Gadot brought her to life in 2016. After Gadot debuted in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the actor went on to headline her own Wonder Woman movies as well as 2017's Justice League. Since 2020, Wonder Woman 3 has been in the development stages, with Gadot set to reprise the role and Jenkins helming the threequel.
However, only a day after Gadot celebrated her casting anniversary, Wonder Woman 3 ran into a major block. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Jenkins' Wonder Woman 3 is currently considered dead and not moving forward in its latest incarnation. According to their sources, Jenkins had re-submitted her treatment, which she co-wrote with Geoff Johns, to the studio. However, the new DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures leaders informed Jenkins that the sequel, as it stood, didn't fit in with the new plans that are in the works for the DCU.
Safran and Gunn have in mind for the DCU. Time will tell if that will even be the case, as Gunn and Safran have yet to comment publicly on the story.
While this is certainly a massive disappointment, given how iconic Gadot's Wonder Woman became in the DCU, it will hopefully not be the end for her character. Not only did Gadot's take on the DC heroine become hugely popular, but her franchise has been one of the more successful ones for the DCU, so it would be weird to scrap it altogether. With a lot of uncertainty about the Justice League actors in the DCU, time will tell what happens to Wonder Woman 3 and beyond.
